Hematologic Events – Overview and Risk in Underlying Disease

Hematologic manifestations, most commonly anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia, can occur in patients with autoimmune diseases. Further confounding the issue is the fact that hematologic abnormalities can also occur as a result of the treatment regimen itself. This section provides a general overview of hematologic events with a specific emphasis on the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of drug-induced hematologic events. In addition, information regarding the association of hematologic events and certain autoimmune diseases is presented.

Information pertaining to the risk of hematologic events with specific drug therapy is covered in a separate topic.
